Standing majestically on the banks of the Tagus River in Lisbon, the Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) is an iconic symbol of Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Built in the early 16th century as both a fortress and ceremonial gateway to the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site reflects the Manueline architectural style with its intricate stone carvings, maritime motifs, and distinctive turrets. Its strategic location once protected Lisbon’s harbor and served as a departure point for many historic voyages of exploration.

Capturing the Belém Tower at twilight was a vision I’d long held. As the light softened and the tide ebbed, I explored the area, seeking the perfect perspective to showcase the tower’s beauty. This angle, with waves gently washing ashore and reflecting the tower’s silhouette on the wet sand, created a composition that highlights its striking architecture and connection to the sea. The balance of natural light and the tower’s details made this photograph one of my favorites.
