Balanced Modernist
$1,100.00
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, located in La Jolla, California, is an architectural marvel designed by renowned architect Louis Kahn. Completed in 1965, the institute was commissioned by Jonas Salk, the developer of the polio vaccine, and combines functionality with breathtaking design. Its striking use of concrete, teak, and open spaces creates a harmonious blend of form and function. The central courtyard, framed by symmetrical modernist buildings, features a linear water feature that flows toward the Pacific Ocean, symbolizing continuity and focus. This architectural gem continues to inspire scientists, artists, and architects alike.
With a few hours to spare before teaching a workshop in San Diego, I decided to visit the Salk Institute. Having heard about its stunning architecture, I was eager to see it in person. As I stepped into the main courtyard, I was captivated by the symmetry and modern elegance of the space. The simplicity and balance of the design inspired me to create the photograph Balance Modernist, a tribute to this incredible architectural achievement. I am grateful for the time I had to explore and capture this masterpiece.

Ada Covered Bridge in Cheer
The Ada Covered Bridge, also known as the "Bradfield Bridge," is a charming historic structure located in Ada, Michigan. Built in 1867, this 125-foot-long bridge spans the Thornapple River and is one of the few remaining covered bridges in the state. Its unique construction and picturesque surroundings make it a beloved landmark, especially during the winter months when snow blankets the landscape and holiday lights enhance its nostalgic beauty.
While visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I grew up, I stumbled upon the Ada Covered Bridge shortly after a snowfall just before Christmas. To my surprise, the bridge was illuminated with festive Christmas lights, creating a magical scene. I captured the image, which became a personal favorite. One of my close friends admired the photograph so much that they displayed it above their fireplace mantel. Every time I see it in their home, I can’t help but smile, remembering that special moment.
